Chrome lining and nitride treatments are often compared as if one must always be better. In this interview, Mike Semanoff asks Nathan Schueth about the differences, the role of manufacturing quality, and why the intended application changes the answer.

The central distinction: a lining versus a treatment
At 1:02, Nathan distinguishes chrome lining, which adds a layer to the bore, from nitriding, which treats the steel’s surface. That difference underlies his discussion of precision and corrosion resistance. He explains that the quality of the original barrel and the consistency of the process both matter.
He does not say that a chrome-lined barrel cannot be accurate. In fact, he emphasizes the experience of manufacturers that have refined the process. His comparison is about potential tradeoffs, not a guarantee that every barrel with one label will outperform every barrel with another.
Application matters more than a universal winner
At 3:00, the conversation shifts to durability under different conditions. Nathan distinguishes typical civilian use from unusually severe heat exposure. His point is that a treatment’s strengths need to be considered in the environment for which the finished product was designed.
This makes a simple ranking less useful than it first appears. Precision, resistance to corrosion, and performance under extreme conditions are different criteria. A product description that emphasizes just one of them leaves part of the comparison unanswered.
Longevity, exterior protection, and cost
The discussion at 4:45 addresses expected longevity and the distinction between protecting the inside and outside of a barrel. Nathan describes chrome and nitride as capable of comparable service in the circumstances he is discussing, while explaining why the exterior finish deserves separate attention.
At 5:58, he also notes that manufacturing volume affects cost. A price difference is therefore not, by itself, evidence of a corresponding difference in quality or suitability.
What does “made by” a manufacturer mean?
The closing exchange, beginning around 6:47, discusses private labeling and barrel production. Nathan distinguishes companies that produce their own blanks from those that complete products using blanks supplied by another manufacturer. That distinction adds useful context when evaluating broad claims about who makes a product.
